In November 2011 A Festival of Nativity Crib Scenes was held in St Nicholas Church.  This was immensely successful with visitors from near and far coming to look at the amazing variety of styles and materials.  The children were especially keen to get involved and there were activities provided which included craft and quizzes as well as the opportunity to handle some of the more interactive and robust Nativity Scenes.
Many of the exhibits had been provided on loan by members of the community and neighbouring churches.  There were interpretations from across the globe - a tiny Nativity Scene in a matchbox from Mexico and an unusual interpretation formed of brushes.
Many of the favourites had been specially constructed for the event.  Richard Vere’s beautifully turned figures were a special favourite, copies of the angels being available for sale and boosting church funds. Ian Godley provided a contemporary and simple interpretation in leather and sheepskin as well as an elegant interlocking carved timber design.  Emma Godley provided a minimalist nativity in Lego as well as a Map to Bethlehem based on the format of the iconic London tube map.
There were refreshments and fascinating exhibitions of the Nativity in stamps and other graphic material.  Congratulations to everyone who helped make this such a joyful and successful event.
